How Ambrose works

How Ambrose works

Everyone tees off and the team picks the best shot. Everyone plays their next shot from there, within a club length, no nearer the hole and in the same kind of lie, and you keep going until it’s in. The team writes down one score a hole.

How the team handicap works

Add up everyone’s daily handicap and divide by twice the number of players: 4 for a pair, 6 for three, 8 for four. Take it off the team’s total for the net. Off 8, 12, 15 and 22, that’s 57 ÷ 8 = 7.1.

What is 2-person Ambrose?

Two of you, one ball. Both tee off, take the better drive and both play from there. The team handicap is your two daily handicaps added up and divided by 4.

How many drives does each player need?

It’s up to the comp. Plenty ask for three or four of each player’s drives in a 4-person team, so the long hitter can’t carry the lot. Check the rules on the day.

Is Ambrose the same as a scramble?

Near enough. Ambrose is the Australian name, and it takes a team handicap off the total. A scramble often uses a share of each player’s handicap instead, or none at all.

Is it the same maths as the On Tour app?

Yes. Same rule and the same rounding, so the same card gets the same net in both.
