What par means

Par is what a good golfer is expected to take on a hole: 3, 4 or 5 depending on its length. Add the holes up and you have the course’s par, usually 70 to 72 for 18 holes.

How to read a scorecard

Each hole has its par and its index, which ranks the holes from hardest, 1, to easiest, 18, and decides where handicap shots fall. Scores get marked: a circle for a birdie, a square for a bogey, and two of either for two or more.

  • 2Two circles: an eagle or better
  • 3A circle: a birdie
  • 5A square: a bogey
  • 6Two squares: a double bogey or worse

Gross and net

Gross is every shot you hit. Net takes your handicap off: your daily handicap over a full round, or the shots you get on each hole you’ve played so far.

Stroke play or Stableford?

Stroke play counts every shot, so one big hole can sink the round. Stableford gives points for each hole and stops the damage at none, which is why most social comps play it. Got a Stableford card? Work out your points. Playing as a team? Ambrose.

What’s a hole in one called?

A hole in one, or an ace. On a par 3 it’s also an eagle, on a par 4 an albatross.

Is it the same maths as the On Tour app?

Yes. Same shots on the same holes, so the same card gets the same net in both.
