How to score Stableford

  1. 1

Find your shots. Your daily handicap is how many shots you get. They go on the hardest holes first, by the index on the card.

  2. 2

Take them off. Your score on a hole, less your shots there, is your net score.

  3. 3

Score the points. Net par is 2. One more for every shot better, one less for every shot worse, down to none.

  4. 4

Add them up. Most points wins. 36 over 18 holes is playing to your handicap.

Off 14 on a par 4, index 9: 9 is inside 14, so you get a shot. Take 5 and you’re net 4, a net par, for 2 points. Take 4 and it’s a net birdie for 3. Take 7 and it’s net 6, which is none, so pick up and head to the next tee.

Stableford questions

What is Stableford in golf?

A way of scoring golf in points instead of strokes. Every hole earns points for your score after your handicap shots, and the most points wins. A blow-up hole only costs you that hole, which is why so many club comps and social rounds are played this way. Dr Frank Stableford came up with it, and it was first played at Wallasey, in England, in 1932.

Which holes you get shots on

Index ranks the holes, 1 hardest to 18 easiest. Off 12 you get a shot on index 1 to 12. Off 18, one a hole. Off 28, one a hole and a second on index 1 to 10. A plus handicap gives them back from index 18.

What’s a good Stableford score?

36 is playing to your handicap, so anything over it is a good day. What wins a comp depends on the field, but it’s usually somewhere from the high 30s to the low 40s.

When can I pick up?

Once your score on the hole will be zero points. The rules encourage it: take the zero and keep everyone moving.

How many points is playing to your handicap?

36 over 18 holes, 18 over nine. Two a hole.

How does countback work?

Level on points, the better last nine wins. Still level: the last six, then the last three, then the last hole.

Can you play Stableford without a handicap?

Yes. Put in 0 and it scores you straight off par.

Where do I find my daily handicap?

On the daily handicap chart at the club, or work it out with our golf handicap calculator. It’s your shots for today’s course and tees.

Is it the same maths as the On Tour app?

Yes. Same rules, so the same card gets the same points in both.
